For submission to Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta 2 Abstract Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides are ubiquitous in modern soils and sediments, and their large surface area leads to scavenging of trace elements. Experimental trace element partitioning between Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides and aqueous solutions have been used to elucidate the geochemical composition of the Precambrian oceans based on the trace element concentrations in Precambrian banded iron formations (BIFs). However, previous partitioning experiments did not consider the potential influence of microbially-derived organic material, even though it is widely believed that bacterial phytoplankton was involved in Fe(II) oxidation and the deposition of BIF primary minerals. Therefore, the present study focuses on sorption of Ni to, and co-precipitation of Ni with, both biogenic ferrihydrite (Fe(OH) 3) precipitated by the freshwater photoferrotroph Rhodobacter ferrooxidans SW2 and the marine photoferrotroph Rhodovulum iodosum, as well as chemically synthesized ferrihydrite. The Nature of Stromatolites: 3,500 Million Years of History and a Century of Research
Stromatolites are widely regarded as layered, early lithified, authigenic microbial structures – often domical or columnar in form – that developed at the sediment water interface in freshwater, marine and evaporitic environments (Fig. 1). In addition to this unusually wide environmental distribution, the exceptionally long geological record of stromatolites spans at least 3,500 million years (...
متن کاملSecondary Mineralization of Ferrihydrite Affects Microbial Methanogenesis in Geobacter-Methanosarcina Cocultures.
UNLABELLED The transformation of ferrihydrite to stable iron oxides over time has important consequences for biogeochemical cycling of many metals and nutrients. The response of methanogenic activity to the presence of iron oxides depends on the type of iron mineral, but the effects of changes in iron mineralogy on methanogenesis have not been characterized. To address these issues, we construc...
متن کاملTrophic interactions among three elasmobranch species coexisting in the Oman Sea: implications for resource partitioning
In this study, trophic interactions were studied among three elasmobranches including Iago omanensis, Rhinobatos punctifer and Torpedo sinuspersici coexisting in the depth ranging from 50 to 100 meters in the Oman Sea (Sistan and Balochistan waters). A total of 238 specimens were collected using industrial bottom trawlers of ‘FERDOWS’ during spring and summer,2014 and their stomach contents wer...
متن کاملControl of Earth-like magnetic fields on the transformation of ferrihydrite to hematite and goethite
Hematite and goethite are the two most abundant iron oxides in natural environments. Their formation is controlled by multiple environmental factors; therefore, their relative concentration has been used widely to indicate climatic variations. In this study, we aimed to test whether hematite and goethite growth is influenced by ambient magnetic fields of Earth-like values. Ferrihydrite was aged...
متن کاملکارایی فرایند فتوکاتالیستی با نانو ذرات سیلیکا در مقایسه با زیرکونیا در حذف نیکل دو ظرفیتی از محلول های آبی و تعیین شرایط بهینه حذف
Background and purpose: Nickel is one of the heavy metals that originates from various industries such as plating and dyeing and leads to many environmental problems, thus, it is important to remove it. The aim of this study was to assess the photocatalytic process by silica and zirconia nanoparticles in nickel removal. Materials and methods: In this applied-fundamental study after construcrin...
